You have to know someone really well to describe them. Everything else is lists. You only see the shape of a hand, hairs growing alone, the tiny point of an ear, you only see these things on a person you care for. You can only see these things with love. And moreover, it is only with love that you can put them together, only love that can make a whole from the parts, only love that can build a person from a pinky, a hair, an ear.

What about in my case, dear friend?
ReplyDeleteI don't know your digits or your face, and I still have to think to remember everyone's favorite: your eyes... HOWEVER I know what it means when both of your indescribeable eyebrows rise at the same time while the rest of your blurry face drops. ALSO I know when you say something about sweatpants and sandels it's an allusion to way back in the day.
Does that still count as knowing someone? It took me 14 years to realize your face structure is that of any Eastern European, but only seconds to find out where you are, if you want to be there, and whether I need to be too.
Tamasha,
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean you have to be able to describe someone to prove you really know them, I meant that describing someone really well means you have to know them. Also, I think you could do a pretty good job of describing someone without actually describing their features. You got pretty close right there.
